Torus Receives Planning Approval for Melwood Redevelopment

13 December 2022

Leading affordable housing developer, Torus, is celebrating receiving planning permission for its landmark redevelopment of LFC’s former training ground, Melwood, and getting the go ahead to build 162 new homes on the site.

Investing £48 million into the scheme, 59 houses and 7 bungalows will be created along with a state-of-the-art Extra Care Scheme, comprising of 96 1- and 2-bedroom apartments. All available via Affordable Rent and Shared Ownership, the residential development will sit alongside the existing Melwood building, which Torus will retain and open to the community, creating a unique sporting legacy on a site synonymous with world-class football.

Actively creating a multi-generational community, Torus’ housing-led regeneration of Melwood will see the iconic site transformed to meet the current and future needs of West Derby’s community by not only bolstering access to modern, affordable housing options in the area, but working to alleviate flooding issues in the area with the use of a Sustainable Drainage System.

Discussing this latest milestone in Melwood’s legacy, Managing Director of Torus Developments, Chris Bowen, said:

“Having been working on the scheme for the past three years, the whole team is thrilled that our plans have now been approved and we can start creating a new future for this iconic site.

“We have worked hard to develop a scheme that will positively impact the local area and provide homes and facilities that will make Melwood even more of a community asset. The scheme meets a number of identified needs so will provide affordable homes for older people and those with care needs, those looking to get on the property ladder and even those looking to downsize.

“Our approach is a considered one, and one which will see both the history and the future of Melwood celebrated, creating a housing-led scheme that will transform not only the site, but West Derby and the wider Liverpool City Region.”
